Resettlement in Kilinochchi is taking place continuously on the instructions of the President. Its launching took place recently under the patronage of Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa.
Kilinochchi was the administrative city of the LTTE terrorists. They had destroyed many of the buildings when the troops liberated it. No one was permitted to enter Kilinochchi until the resettlement commenced, as the terrorists had heavily mined the area. However, the Uthuru Wasanthaya Task Force expedited de-mining using the most modern machinery and strategies. It was a difficult task. As such, resettlement was delayed. Resettlement in Kilinochchi and Poonakari areas in the Kilinochchi District is now in progress. 2453 families comprising a little over 10,000 members were resettled. They were given dry rations sufficient for six months. Each individual was also given an allowance of 5,000 rupees and a deposit of 20,000 rupees was also awarded.
Basil Rajapaksa said that the resettlement will continue daily. More than 100,000 civilians had already been resettled. Ministers Risath Bathiyudeen, Arumugam Thondaman and Milroy Fernando, Deputy Minister Neomal Perera, TNA Parliamentarian Shivanathan Kishore, PLOTE leader D. Siddharthan, Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri, GA Vavuniya P.S.M. Charles and Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya were among those present at the launch of the resettlement in Kilinochchi.
