Marine Depositional Systems of Southeast France Led by Basin Dynamics LLC 11-16 Sept. 2016 Annot, France
Course description: The Eocene shallow marine to deep-water deposits of the Annot Sandstone (Les Gres d’Annot) of Southeast France are dramatically exposed along the mountainous skyline of Les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and surrounding areas, about 50km northwest of Nice, France. This is an opportunity to learn about the stratigraphic evolution of multiple confined sub-basins that display the interaction between clastic-laden flows and their basin margin. The processes of sedimentation and stratigraphic architecture of gravelly to fine-grained onlapping strata, seismic-scale channel-fill, and splay deposits will be featured from basin margin to middle basin. Key risks in oil and gas drilling including reservoir presence, reservoir deliverability, trap, and seal presence will be main discussions at each stop in the itinerary. The Annot System has been applied as an analogue in the past to help de-risk deltaic to deep-water drilling programs in structurally complex, mini-basin, and salt province plays.
About the instructor: Dr. Jon Rotzien is President of Basin Dynamics, LLC. His expertise is the sedimentology and stratigraphy of deep-water depositional systems, source-to-sink sediment transfer, and basin analysis. Jon aims to address key challenges in the exploration and production of petroleum, including reservoir presence and quality prediction in frontier basins, and reservoir connectivity and deliverability. Prior to his present position at Basin Dynamics, he was an exploration and appraisal geoscientist at BP. He received a Ph.D. in Geological and Environmental Sciences from Stanford University and a B.A. degree in Geology from Colorado College. He has published peer-reviewed research papers and scientific conference proceedings pertaining to petroleum geology, reservoir quality, reservoir characterization, sequence stratigraphy, process sedimentology, stratigraphy, and basin analysis.
