Thomas Newman (1955- ) is a member of an American film-scoring family, his father being the composer Alfred Newman (1900-70), who tied with John Williams as the second most Oscar-nominated person in history (behind Walt Disney). His most recent score is to the 2009 movie 'Brothers'. 'Any Other Name' comes from Newman's Grammy-winning soundtrack to Sam Mendes' 1999 movie, which starred Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening and Thora Birch. The soundtrack as a whole made was minimalist in concept, and made particular use of world and electronic instruments. This published piano solo version of ' Any Other Name ' seems to be a condensed version of the full number, which lasts for about 4 minutes and uses electronic(?) pads to accompany the piano chords. This version captures the atmosphere of the longer piece very well. I have played it as written, except that I have deliberately cut the first static chord from 12 beats to 4. If I have left it at its full length, I think I would lose a lot of viewers before the piece gets going!
