How to Get Motivated to Exercise!

A Facebook fan recently asked me "How do I stay Motivated to Exercise?" This is a great question because almost everyone struggles with motivation and discipline from time to time. So, I thought I would take a couple minutes to address about how I manage to balance my life and all the responsibility that comes with work and family and still manage to exercise and take care of myself.
First, I recommend everyone Use a Calendar, and Schedule your workouts into your day... every day. Even if it is only 30 minutes, some is better than none. Don't let Perfect be the enemy of good, we are in this for the long haul. I use Google Calendar, it works with my phone really well, but that's just me. The key thing is to schedule your time for yourself daily - to exercise. This should be as regular as brushing your teeth, just something that you need to do every day - don't over think it! Also, I think that staying organized with your calendar and daily tasks list will help you keep your stress levels down - hopefully - and make you better at whatever you do...

Secondly, Just Stop Making Excuses. Seriously. This is not school, this is not for a grade, your dog did not eat your homework, and your body doesn't want to hear about the dumb excuses. We are all busy. In fact, I train some high powered CEO's who are incredibly busy running their companies and even they find time to schedule in their workouts when it would be very easy for them to make any number of lame excuses. So, Shut up with the whining and go for a walk, and eat some carrots instead of the fries.

Third, I recommend everyone make some Food Rules! I have a few food rules that I have built into my system's operating system (point to brain). A few of them are - No fried foods, no desserts, no sodas, and JERF - Just Eat Real Food from good sources. Those help me draw a line in the sand, and i seriously don't feel like I am missing out... I've just lost the taste for those things.

And Lastly, bring the crew along! Try Family Hikes and bike rides, or if you don't have kids or family, go ride or hike with friends and make it a social event. This will also make it fun and something you look forward to throughout the week. I ride mountain bikes on the weekends with some neighbors, and I totally look forward to that during my long days at work during the week. So, find something you like to do that is safe, get in the habit of doing it, and find someone to do it with you.

Those are a few points that help me, but what helps you practice your healthy, active lifestyle? Leave me a comment below and let me know what is working for you - I'm sure the community would love to hear about other people's journeys.
