The National Standards to Prevent, Detect and Respond to Prison Rape are binding on all corrections facilities by August 2013. This presentation explains the standards and how they affect medical and mental health care policy and practice. It will cover the role of health care leadership in the coordinated response, a foundational best practice included in the standards. It also will address the impact of sexual trauma and how the experience of being incarcerated presents challenges for survivors of such abuse and those charged with treating them.
