Raag Kausi Kanada
Alaap, Jor and Jhala
Live Concert in Mumbai on April 3rd, 1993
At St. Xaviers Collage

'I have a great nostalgia associated with this Raag, having performed Kausi Kanada first when I was eighteen. Surprisingly, I completely over looked this Raag for my entire career until this particular concert. I had planned something else for that evening in Mumbai, but suddenly the urge to present this Raag overtook me completely. This is the peculiar character of Indian Classical Music. Nothing is planned...nothing remains the same on stage...everything changes to accommodate moods and emotions. Kausi Kanada is a beautiful night Raag. Yet another Raag that demands fragile handling. There are whole lot of Raags with the similar set of notes, the most popular of them being Darbari. Its just the arrangement and the question of movement. The basic framework is follows. Ascending C E-flat F A-flat B-flat c and
Descending c A-flat B-flat G E-flat F D C. The top Sa is shown by a small c to show it is an octave above the big C.

The belly of the Sarod is covered with animal skin, therefore it is sensitive to humidity. One can hear a very different tonal quality between Marwa and Kausi Kanada because of the different locales and their climatic conditions. I have used a Bass Tanpura and a treble Tanpura in this piece.

While I perform, I am constantly singing inside.... therefore, I sing through my Sarod.
