I recently sat down with my friend Sadie from Eclectic Trekker to talk about some of her experiences volunteering in Southeast Asia. We covered so much great material that this is going to be a three-part series!
First up here we talk about elephant tourism and why it is so bad - seriously guys, please do NOT ever ride an elephant, do not ever pay to see an elephant do tricks, and do not ever buy an elephant painting. These practices are all terribly cruel and elephants are far more sensitive than most people know (both emotionally and physically). Beware of any "sanctuary" offering these things, because they're not a true sanctuary; the only true sanctuaries are places where the elephants can just be elephants. I have heard many people say, "Not all places treat the elephants badly. It is possible to train and ride them without cruelty". NO IT ISN'T. There is no way to make a huge elephant subject to a human master without hurting it, and rides - any rides - hurt their delicate backs. Do not take part!!!
