The Caresser was one of the greats of Calypso. This is one of his best songs. Lyrically it is superb. I love that instead of 'Explorer' the song is titled 'Exploiter' and it becomes a criticism of colonial expansion. I also love how it crams in places like the Canal Zone and the Sahara and historical figures like Lord Nelson, Columbus and Antonio De Berrio. History, geography and social commentary all in the one song. Forget the Beatles and even Dylan, Calypso really was the 20th century musical genre that pushed song lyrics into a new frontier. Those 1930s calypso singers were way ahead of everything.
