SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has called on Singaporeans to vote for a new People's Action Party (PAP) leadership team to enable the country to continue to thrive and prosper.

Mr Lee, who is also the Secretary-General of the party, made the call at the Young PAP's 25th anniversary celebrations on Sunday.

He said the need for renewal is not only critical for the party but also for Singapore, as he paid tribute to the contributions of outgoing MPs and ministers and welcomed the new candidates.

Mr Lee said: "The reason there is a leadership team like that today is because we have been building leadership in the PAP over the last 20-30 years. And I think this team, grey-hair not withstanding or thin-hair not withstanding, we can serve for another 10 years. We are good for another 10 years.

"But what happens after that? We need to renew and deepen this leadership now, to ensure that Singapore can continue to grow and to prosper. This is how our system works, we are all in this for the greater good and must be ready to make way when time comes to allow a new generation to carry the torch forward."

Mr Lee said the 24 new candidates and the next batch will produce the next leadership team for Singapore.

He said the PAP has made an exceptional effort to gather this slate. At least five of them have the potential to be ministers, while about half may become more then backbenchers over time.

Mr Lee is also confident that the new candidates can lead Singapore for at least two decades.

Mr Lee said: "We need to look over the horizon, anticipate and prepare for problems and build for the future. But we must also be in touch with people's sentiments and worries and address the day-to-day bread and butter concerns.

"Never forget we are servants of the people, not their masters. Always maintain a sense of humility and service. Never lord it over the people we are looking after and serving.

"Be as strict with ourselves as we are with others, because that is the way for us to win respect and support and for the PAP to be the people's choice to govern Singapore.

"However many years you may be in power, however long you may have been an MP, remember the People's Action Party, you are acting on behalf of the people."

Mr Lee said the PAP government has acted for the people by helping to grow the economy, build schools and providing monetary assistance for low-income families.

He added that the PAP government has lived up to its responsibilities to the people.

PM Lee said Singapore will always remain vulnerable as a small country. So he said it is important that Singapore continues to build itself as an exceptional nation.

This, Mr Lee said, can be done by being more agile, more resilient and offering brighter opportunities to all citizens and their children. That is why he emphasised that in order for the PAP to continue to help the nation through new challenges, the party must win the mandate of the voters.
