STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- DeKalb County police said off-duty sheriff's deputy Derrick Yancey shot and killed a man who he said fatally shot his wife at his home.

Police said they received a call shortly after 1 p.m. Monday and investigators found two people dead at the home near Stone Mountain.

Yancey told investigators that the man, whom he did not know, shot and killed his wife, Linda Yancey. The deputy said he then fatally shot the man, Officer Mekka Parish said.

"It's hard for anyone to take the life of anyone, but I guess he had to protect his home," said neighbor Lorraine Hunt.

Parish said investigators are trying to determine whether the Yanceys knew the man.

"Our prayers go out to him and his family and everybody else that's involved, and we as a community will hopefully get together and support them and give them any kind of help and support they would need," said neighbor Maurice Coley.
