This is my first attempt at programming an autonomous robot using a PicAxe 28X1 Project Board with a L293D motor driver and an SRF005 Ultrasonic Range Sensor. The robot drives forward until it senses something in it's path. Then it stops, looks left and right and then turns to face the direction with the most distance of space. If both directions are too close then the robot will reverse and turn around to avoid getting stuck in corners.
