June 16: International Domestic Workers' Day -- We Celebrate and Fight On!

Domestic work makes all other work possible

In June 16, 2011, at the 100th International Labour Conference in Geneva, the world's governments, workers and employers overwhelming voted for an international treaty to guarantee the basic rights of domestic workers.

So June 16 - the very day that domestic workers won the historic ILO Convention 189 - has now become International Domestic Workers' Day.

On June 16, 2012, the first anniversary, we celebrate again our huge victory. And we pledge to make our voices strong and loud once again to demand that governments:

• review national laws and practices and reform them to bring them into line with the Convention and its accompanying Recommendation

• take the opportunity of the 101st International Labour Conference to make a public commitment to ratify the Convention and implement the Recommendation, and to do so as soon as possible.

Our fight will continue, to ensure that the standards adopted a year ago become a reality for domestic workers the world over. Domestic workers must not have to wait any longer for their long overdue and desperately needed protection from abuse.
