Student Suffers From Button Phobia - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

Most of us have a fear of something. Some of the most common fears include spiders, snakes, heights or flying, but in one recent case, buttons were the phobia inducing culprit! Hannah Matthews, a 21 year old Portsmouth college student is going through counseling due to her overwhelming fear of buttons. Called Koumpounophobia, it is a scientific condition causing sufferers to panic while in the presence of the small, harmless clothing mechanisms. Hannah only wears closure garments with zippers and states her fear began at the age of 5 resulting in panic attacks. She states "there's just something about the shape and the texture that freaks me out" and says seeing someone wearing them or just hearing the word 'button' makes her severely uncomfortable.

Buttons aren't the only seemingly odd phobias. There's Chorophobia, an extreme fear of dancing, Arachibutyrophobia, the fear of peanut butter sticking to the top of one's mouth, Pteronophobia, the phobia of being tickled by feathers and Ablutophobia, the fear of bathing or washing.

Don't know how I developed such repugnance over buttons but to make you understand, those little pieces of plastic sewn to the fabric, for me are like warts hanging loosely from the skin. Imagine yourself touching those warts on someone's skin. That's the same feeling I'd have when touching the buttons on someone's shirt.

the metal studs on jeans/poppers are fine cause they are not buttons in my eyes

white school shirts i tolerate because i had to , i still had to wipe my hands after doing them up though. polo shirts! i had to wear them in high school, first week i refused and was in a right panic! ergh :L but those browny coloured ones are the worst! and the smaller they are is even worse. they are disgusting! i don't own a piece of clothing with a button!

Really, what is all that nonsense? Koumpounophobia IS NOT FEAR of buttons, for fuck's sake. We koumpounophobics don't wear clothes with buttons because we just find them disgusting, but we don't run away terrified when we see a button on a shirt. It's amazing how media exaggerates less common things to make sensationalist news.

See I'm not afraid of buttons, they just make me sick- just how most people aren't "scared" of poop they just don't want to be around it and they don't go out of their way to interact with it- So glad I'm not the only one who has to deal with this...

Oh god I've had this since I was like 3 now I'm in my teens but my brother always used to chase me around with buttons. It has lessened a bit since I'm forced to wear a uniform to school but It still feels weird

call me a bad person, but I find it hard to believe that one could actually suffer the condition of button-phobia. You might not like them, fair enough, so don't use them. Thats all. One might as well have a phobia for pencils, or for spoons or for ... sorry, I can't comprehend. I don't even see how phobias work ... is it a strong dislike up to fear? If so: how can one develop a fear of buttons? (0_o) ... Why fear buttons other people are wearing?
