Chapter 10 ~ Gregg
When Gregg woke up, he felt light. As if he didn't weigh anything. He looked around to see where he was. He was at a hospital. He looked at the clock. 8:24pm. Wait -- what?! 8:24pm! But he was at the party at 7pm! Then a cold shiver ran down his spine. Selena! The man! What if he had hurt her?! Why wasn't he there? He had to get back to that party!
A nurse was walking to him.
Gregg: Excuse me, miss! I need your help! My girlfriend --
But as he tried to tell her, she walked right past him, as if he wasn't there.
Gregg would've thought that nurse was rude, but something didn't seem right; none of the doctors or nurses seemed to notice him. What was going on?
Selena: But you can't give up!
Selena! She was here! Gregg breathed in relief. Selena was just around the corner. But when he saw her, she was crying. Her make-up was smudged from tears. David and Jake were there. David was panicked and Jake was also crying.
Doctor: Ms Gomez, there's nothing more we can do.
David: But there must be something! Maybe he's just unconscious or in shock or something!
Selena: Please, you can't give up on him!
Doctor: I know it's hard to take in, but it's too late.
Selena: (frantic) He can't be gone! You have to do something! Don't let him leave me --
Doctor: I'm sorry Ms. Gomez. We tried.
Selena stood there, frozen.
Jake: So that's it?
Selena: (shakes her head) No, no, no, no! He can't be gone!
Selena ran past the doctor into the room. Gregg went in after her.
Doctor: Ms. Gomez!
As Gregg saw why Selena was upset, he got the shock of his life.
He saw himself on the table, covered to his shoulders in a sheet. Selena cried frantically. Gregg's heart almost stopped. Why was he there, on a table, when he was standing here? Then he thought back to the party and the horrible thought hit him.
He was dead. No one could see him. That man had killed him. Selena couldn't see him.
David, Jake and the doctor came in. Selena rushed to David and cried frantically. David hugged her as the doctor covered up his dead body with the sheet.
Gregg watched hopelessly as Selena, David and Jake were led away by the police.
Gregg sat outside the room, watching the doctor wheel his lifeless body away. He couldn't believe he was dead. The feeling hadn't sunk in yet.
???: So what happened to you?
Gregg looked up to see a girl standing above him. She had long dark brown curly hair and was wearing a sparkly top with shorts, leggings and boots.
Girl: I can tell you're new here.
Gregg: You can see and hear me?
Girl: Would I be talking to you if I could?
Gregg: Who are you?
Girl: Debby. Debby Ryan.
Gregg: How can you --
Debby: I'm just like you. I'm a ghost.
Just then, Debby raised her hand and placed it on Gregg's head. Gregg felt a shock go right through him.
Gregg: Ow! What did you do that for!?
Debby: Ah, shot. And in the heart too. The one in the heart always does the trick.
Gregg: You're a ghost?
Debby: Same as you.
Debby: You're a little slow, aren't you?
Gregg: But, I'm not a ghost!
Debby: If you're not a ghost, why can no one see you?
Gregg: But...no...It can't be! I can't be dead! I can't be a ghost!
Debby: Hate to burst your bubble, but you are dead and you are a ghost.
Gregg: It can't be true...hang on. This must be a dream.
Debby: A Dream?
Gregg: I probably drank too much at the party and passed out and this is all just one big awful dream that I should be waking up from anytime now.
Gregg waited for something to happen.
Debby: OK, look...I know it's hard to grip at first. But dying's not as bad as everyone thinks it is. In fact, it's awesome.
Gregg: What is awesome about being dead?!
Debby: Lots of things. You can walk right through stuff! I don't have to worry about that stupid doorknob that no one can use for the ladies' room.
Gregg: WILL YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!?!
Debby: Well, sorry grouchy pants! I'm going to the cardiac wing.
As Debby disappeared, Gregg tried rubbing his head, trying to wake up.
Gregg: It's just a dream. It's just a dream. It's not real. It's not real. (More frantically) It's a dream, it's a dream, it's a dream! There's no place like home...there's no place like home....there's no place....there's no....there's...
