"Hi I'm Therese Kerr and this is my video submission for the Microsoft Student Partners application. When I began thinking about the world's toughest problems, a huge issue that stood out was war and the absence of world peace. Currently, half of the world is at war fighting about oil. If more of a variety of methods were used in everyday actions to conserve energy and decrease oil use, there would be much less conflict over oil. So, how could technology be used to accomplish this task? I think the development of a "campus car-pool" application, accessible by both computer and cell phone, could lead to less oil use. The main purpose of the app would be to minimize the amount of driving students do on college campus's across the country. Basically this app would use social networking to connect students traveling to the same locations on and off of campus. While showing alternative transportation methods, like biking or walking, for how to get from point a to point b, the app would also perform tasks like organizing bus trips for good deals to frequently traveled locations during spring break and other vacation times. For example, for spring break many students across campus drove to Florida. On this application a group would be created for people planning on driving to Florida. When enough participants joined the group, bus companies would compete to provide bus service to the students, which, in turn, would create low rates. This application would appeal to students because it would make traveling cheaper, but its greater benefit would involve helping improve the world by decreasing demand for oil use, therefore decreasing the conflict involving oil in the middle east, and finally preventing war.
