In 1997, the devastating ‘millennium flood’ hit Worclaw, Poland, killing 56 people, leaving 200,000 people homeless, and causing $4 billion in damages. Twenty years later, 2 million people in the country are now better protected from floods thanks to efforts by the World Bank.
