Debugging Tools for Atmel Products (ATJTAGICE2)Lately microprocessor and microcontroller manufacturers started integrating modules with in-built debugging functions into their new products. These are the on-chip debug tools. A specialised channel for connection to a computer is necessary for the debug functions to work. Testing serial interface of JTAG type is often used as such channel. This is why hardware debug tools based on on-chip debug modules are often called JTAG emulators.The JTAG emulator model JTAGICE2 by Atmel does background debugging of the user program. It supports all AVR microcontrollers with JTAG interface. These include Atmega128, Atmega123, Atmega16 and other models. Program debugging for 8-bit AVR controllers is carried out within the AVR studio integrated programming environment. The programming environment AVR32 studio was designed for 32-bit AVR controllers. Version 2.2 is available from the website of Atmel. The delivery set includes the following:The emulator, a CD with AVR studio and the user manual, an RS232 cable for connecting to a computer, a USB cable for connecting to a computer, a ribbon cable for connecting to the target circuit board, and a cable for an external power supply.JTAGICE2 can emulate all analog and digital functions. It supports simultaneous scanning of several microcircuits through JTAG. It can be connected to a PC with the help of RS232 or USB interfaces. JTAGICE2 fully supports Assembler and high-level languages. It has breakpoints for data and programs; all operations and breakpoints are in real time. The target voltage ranges from 1.8 to 5.5 V. The supply voltage is 9 to 12 V. It can also feed through a USB cable.The JTAGICE2 emulator can be used as an on-board programmer for AVR microcontrollers with JTAG or Debugwire interfaces.
