Veteran White House journalist Carl M. Cannon came to the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on March 6, 2013 to discuss Michelle Obama, the first African American first lady, a Harvard-trained lawyer, and one of her husband's most valued political mentors. This presentation is the first in the series Beyond the Gowns: First Ladies in American History.

Cannon is the Washington editor of He is a past recipient of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting and the Aldo Beckman Award, the two most prestigious awards for White House coverage.
