This short video was shot by CORAL's Executive Director, Michael Webster, during a May 2013 visit to Palmyra Atoll, part of the northern Line Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Note the high coral cover and diversity on this reef, as well as the many fishes, manta rays and sharks--all evidence of a healthy reef.

In 2012, a new program called the Reefs Tomorrow Initiative was launched with initial funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. RTI is a partnership between a host of world-class research and environmental institutions, including CORAL, with the mission to advance coral reef science, management, and conservation through interdisciplinary study of reef resilience, and to work with managers to apply this new understanding to reef conservation. Researchers within RTI are collecting data from Palmyra Atoll because it represents a near-pristine reef environment. By learning what enables Palmyra to thrive, we hope to apply those lessons to our other projects sites and develop more effective, efficient conservation strategies.
