Alabama Governor George Wallace was shot several times by Arthur Bremer on May 15, 1972, in Laurel, Maryland, while campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination, at a time when he was receiving high ratings in national opinion polls. Wallace survived the assassination attempt but was paralysed from the waist down for the rest of his life.
