Sporadic outbreaks of multiple shootings and numerous female victims defined the month in gun violence in Philadlephia.

At the GunCrisis Reporting Project we tracked 102 incidents which left 111 shooting victims throughout October, based on original reporting, media reports and other sources.

On two occasions, we counted 10 overnight victims, including one night with two double shootings, on October 18th.

In one of those incidents, a 61-year-old was lying in her bed when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet fired during an attempted robbery outside.

There were two 48-hour periods with no shooting victims, which marked the first full days without a single victim since we launched GunCrisis.org last March.

There we no victims at the peak day of Hurricane Sandy's impact, but numerous people were shot just before and soon after, including incidents in which three women were shot on October 30th.

Among them, a 19-year-old babysitter was killed when she was struck by a stray bullet during a gunfight on the same block where a man had been shot and critically wounded two days earlier.

Numerous victims were shot multiple times, including one man who died after suffering ten gunshot wounds. In another incident, one man was shot six times and second was shot five times, but both were later reported in stable condition.

Several suspicious deaths were reported throughout the month, with at least two later confirmed to be shooting victims.

Four police-involved shootings were reported as well as one incident in which a store owner shot a robbery suspect.

This count excludes self-inflicted shooting but a 71-year-old man became the oldest gunfire victim when he accidentally shot himself in the hand.

Of the 96 victims we could identify by age, the average age of victims was 29.

Twenty-two of the victims were pronounced dead on the day they were shot and 22 more were initially reported in critical condition, including the youngest victim of the month, a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the face.
