THIS HURTS! What hurts...: right achilles tendon/heel. How you hurt it...: I am a 57 yr. old, runner for 30 years. Gradually over the last year, I have had sore achilles bilaterally and about 3 months ago as it is the running season (in South Florida), I increased by running distance dramatically, running in 5K and 10 K runs regularly and I run from 15 to 25 miles per week. I had an incident that after my run, showering, watching television, both achilles tendons (or the backs of my ankles) would hurt when I got up and walked. On the right, the back left part of my heel was swollen. I stopped running for 3 weeks and all went back to normal, no pain, no right heel swelling at all. I added heel lifts to all of my shoes (I did some research, etc.) and I have begun stretching and doing the exercises that I have seen you instruct. However, I am running for 30 minutes, no problem with my left heel or back of the heel, however, I am having pain after running and swelling of the left part of the back of my right heel. This pain is keeping me from increasing my running distance. I find that icing reduces the swelling and helps alot. When you hurt it...: see above. Your pain level (1 is low, 10 is high pain): I have pain and swelling in the right heel after running and resting. Your age and overall health...: 57, excellent health Any other information you feel is relevant...: I would appreciate any further advice.
