An anti Valentine song? Not really, this amazingly insightful composition by Billy Bragg deals with a celebration of self worth and a realisation that lasting relationships are based on compromise and the selfless ability to put the feelings of others before your own...........proper love.
Roses are red, but violence and being stripped of your human dignity through physical and mental abuse day in and day out is more than just a lighter shade of the blues. It's the darkest of dark times and a place where some cannot find any escape and others can never find closure. Sometimes the pretence is endured for a life time and sometimes the cycle is broken.
Mr Bragg's song deals with an empowered woman who is prepared to move on and regain her own self esteem with the help, no doubt, of a strong family and caring friends. If you love yourself then you can love others. All journeys begin with a single step and she's taking it. Self respect and equality is the right of all. No one deserves to be treated like a second class citizen. Blah, blah, blah, rant over ......... and relax!!
