The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, in recent years, has gained international attention for its concept of Gross National Happiness. That was a term coined by Bhutan's fourth king in 1972 and was meant to be an alternative to the traditional measure of development: gross national product. The small country is now taking GNH beyond an intellectual discourse and incorporating its values into its educational curriculum. VOA Correspondent Steve Herman, reporting from Bhutan, discovered that stressing happiness actually has deep historical roots in the remote nation.
