Peter Kirstein CBE put the first computer on the ARPANET outside the US and was instrumental in defining and implementing TCP/IP.

Peter joined the University of London Institute of Computer Science in 1967, transferring to the new UCL Department of Statistics and Computer Science in 1973. He established the Computer Science Department at UCL in 1980, which he led until 1994.

Peter retired on 14th November 2019, 50 years to the day in which he made the first demonstration of a packet switching network in the UK.
