Scarbalis, Sr. Edward J. Age 81, of Waukegan, passed away on December 25, 2011. He was born April 26, 1930 in Waukegan to Jonas Skarbalius and Ona Sacevicius, and was lifelong resident of Waukegan. On September 24, 1954 he was united in marriage with Pearl Schultz at Holy Rosary Church in North Chicago. He was a graduate of Waukegan Township High School, and attended night school at the College of Lake County, receiving an Associate in Science degree in electronics. In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, serving on active duty during the Korean War and several years afterward as a reservist. He retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Company as an Engineering Manager of Maintenance engineering after over 37 years. He became a registered member of St Bartholomew Church in 1954, serving as an usher, lector, and Eucharistic minister. He was also First Chairperson for St. Bartholomew's school board, a member of the Parish Council and a member of the parish staff. On April 26, 1986, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon at Holy Name Cathedral by Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Bernardin. He did two Quarters Clinical Patient Education at Victory Memorial Hospital (Chaplain Training), took on the Parish Ministry of Care of visiting the shut-ins, became a volunteer Hospital Chaplain and a Field Advocate for the Marriage Tribunal, and was Spiritual Advisor for the Black Catholics of Lake County. He was one of the original Deacons involved with administering Communion Services at the Lake County Jail, and became Knights of Columbus Council Deacon and Council Chaplain with the retirement of Father Paul Cull. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0281, the Knights of Columbus 4th degree Bishop Quarter Assembly, Knights of Columbus 3rd degree Council No. 731, Zion Benton Moose Lodge No. 667, and the Telephone Pioneers. He is survived by four children, Edward (Janice) Scarbalis of Waukegan, David (Kathy) Scarbalis of Fairfax, Virginia, Stephen (Rochelle) Scarbalis of Gurnee and Barbara Corso of Waukegan; also by six grandchildren, Matthew, Nora, Daniel, Michael, Benjamin and Amy, and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Jr. and Amelia, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, on February 22nd 1980, after celebrating 25 years of marriage, and by his sister, Helen Dragunas, earlier this year. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 30, from 4 to 8pm at Bradley Funeral Home, 313 Tenth St., North Chicago. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am on Saturday, December 31, at Most Blessed Trinity Parish, Holy Family Church, 450 Keller Ave., Waukegan. Entombment will be at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Deacon Ed Scarbalis' name may be made to: University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, 1000 E.
