Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are North America's two greatest vertical rise ski resorts. They feature 8171 acres of skiable terrain, 17 bowls, 4 glaciers and over 200 trails. What it doesn't have as yet is enough snow to open it all up. Currently, the area is in the grips of arctic air, with frostbite a concern. Snowmaking machines are working 24/7 with less than 20 inches (50 centimeters) of coverage. Today, it was minus 20 degrees centigrade in the Alpine, colder near the peaks, with wind chill dipping the temperatures further. Last year at this time (visit previous video blogs at: 12sportsonline.com) the powder was deep, and all areas were open. This week, the main runs are slick and icy in high traffic areas. Still, there's soft snow to be found with the snowguns constantly at work.
