English Translation by Ramesh Krishnakumar, to the invocative rendering by various Vedic priests
Lord Dhanwantari is the god of ayurvedic medicine. Lord Dhanwantari is an Avatar of Lord Maha Vishnu and is often depicted as dark complexioned strong man with a broad chest carrying a jug containing the nectar of immortality and wearing yellow clothes. According to Hindu mythology Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean of milk with a pot of Amrita when it was churned by Gods and Demons.
The samhitas on Ayurveda in eight divisions are available for the benefit of humanity through the grace of Lord Dhanwantari.
Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped all over India as the God of Medicine. Even today, two days before Diwali, the Festival of Lights, people remember and honor him. At dusk, a lamp pointing toward North by North-East is lit at the doorstep of the house to welcome Lord Dhanvantari for health and happiness in life. This day is known as Dhanteras (or Dhanwantari Triodasi, or Dhantrayodashi).
