On a warm day last October, Kellie Barr-Foster was rock climbing at Stonehouse Pond in Barrington. She saw a fisherman, Steve Travis, on the pond and they exchanged a friendly wave.

Later, as Kellie was about to leave, she heard shouts. She soon realized that they were cries for help coming from the pond. Unbelievably, Kellie saw Steve struggling in the water. His boat had capsized and was pulling him under. Kellie wasted no time. She stripped off her gear and dove into the water, swimming quickly to his rescue.

Kellie pulled Steve up by his collar and began to paddle toward shore. His waders, the float and the fishing line, which were wrapped around his legs and feet, weighed him down considerably. Undaunted, Kellie managed to swim him safely to a rock near the shoreline and immediately called 911. Without Kellie's quick, fearless reaction, the outcome may have been very different.
