http://www.clarkson.edu/news/2014/new... Cardiovascular disease has been a leading cause of death since the 1970s. The methods for discovering this condition, however, may be about to change. At Clarkson University, Rick Wang '15, a mechanical engineering honors program student, and Prof. Charles Robinson have taken the way cardiovascular velocity is measured to the next level. In Robinson's lab, they have re-engineered the way to take resting measurements using accelerometers, by holding the subject up on a cushion of air. The subject can now be measured by the accelerometers in the laying, sitting and standing position, without being anchored to the ground, giving Wang and Robinson new data on the cardiovascular system. An accelerometer placed on the chest and head allows a more complete view subject's overall cardiovascular health.
Rick recently received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship award. The Goldwater Scholarship is the most prestigious award in the United States given to undergraduates studying in mathematics, science and engineering.
