The Cathedral is the imperial burial vault of the Romanov dynasty 1613-1917. Peter I the Great, Catherine I (wife of Peter I)I, Alexanders I, II, III, Peter III and wife Catherine II the Great, Anna. Paul and the Nicholas I and the last emperor Nicholas II and family and household members. It is the oldest church in St Petersburg, built in 1712 in early Baroque style with a Bell tower, a radical change from traditional Orthodox church architecture within the fortress built by Peter the Great, There was a prison with torture chamber in the fortress. Alexei, son of Peter I, was tried and executed here for plotting against him. Among the political prisoners were Lenin's brother Alexander Ulyanov, Maxim Gorky and Leon Trotsky. As for Trotsky he was exiled in Mexico and killed by order of Stalin, his tomb to-day remains in Mexico.
