Harvard-"educated" NON-lawyer Ma Ying-jeou can't speak proper English

As Taipei entered 2010 with a stuttering fireworks show for the new year, Taipei 101 displayed a perplexing message: "Taiwan UP."

Couldn't they have even bothered to check with a native English speaker?

"Up with Taiwan" or "Go Taiwan" are just two alternatives which would have actually worked.

I've heard about Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) "excellent" English abilities so many times it makes me sick, yet seeing him and Taipei's mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) chanting "Tai-wan up!" in this CTiTV (中天新聞, where the "C" stands for "China") report nearly had me ROTFLMAO.

Note how instead of calling it "Chinese English" (AKA "Chinglish"), the CTiTV anchor calls it "Taiwan English" (台式英文). Note how CTiTV uses a play on DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen's (蔡英文) name instead of mocking Ma's substandard English.

Note how CTiTV misses a "was" in the subtitle which should have read "'Taiwan touch your heart' *was* better." Note how the CTiTV reporter says "no" when she should have said "not" and that she doesn't seem to realize that the interviewee is imitating her mistake only because he thinks she won't understand him otherwise. Note how the reporter says "Touch your heart?!" as if she's never heard of the ubiquitous slogan.

Remember how Ma supporters (the same people don't seem to notice when Ma refers to himself in the third person) mocked former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) for not speaking English? Can you spot the big, blue double standard?

Remember how Ma supporters couldn't STFU about "UN for Taiwan" (which is perfectly good English)?

Of course you remember these things.

But even if you somehow don't, the most important thing to remember is that Ma supporters maintain one set of standards for him and those who identify with China ("Anything goes!") and a completely different set for Chen Shui-bian and those who identify with Taiwan ("You're not worthy!")
