People have speculated for decades that displays would one day replace vehicle rearview mirrors. As you might imagine, as a mirror manufacturer, this is a concept we’ve taken quite seriously. It’s why we set out to develop the technologies and core competencies necessary to manage this evolution of the rearview mirror.

In general, mirrors are an incredibly efficient and effective way to see what’s behind you. But with current design trends yielding vehicles with higher belt lines and downward sloping roofs, the result is smaller and sometimes non-existent rear windows.

Consequently, the interior mirror’s rearward view is obstructed by C and D pillars, headrests, passengers, luggage, etc.

That’s when you really see the benefits of a full display mirror.

Gentex has pioneered the world’s first hybrid full display mirror. It has a unique bimodal functionality – capable of operating either as a standard automatic-dimming mirror or a rear video display.

The display mode provides a radically improved rear view that can enhance driving safety. It also can substantially minimize the side blind zones.

But the system also has a mirror mode, which is essential, because it means the system will fail safe. And for the times when the driver needs to see the interior of the vehicle, the mirror mode allows that as well.

The Gentex full display mirror is the culmination of years of research and development into vision systems and displays. In fact, we have nearly 20 years of experience in CMOS imager development and supply. And many of the enabling technologies, such as transflective coatings, display backlighting – have been commercialized in current product iterations like rear camera display and around view monitor.

But it’s our rear vision cameras that really set us apart. Our system uses a custom, Gentex-designed CMOS imager engineered specifically for rear vision. It has unprecedented dynamic range. Each imager pixel determines its own exposure, self-adjusting so that the brightest and darkest areas of any given scene are clear and visible.

And, we have the expertise to develop custom camera integration options for all your vehicles. Vehicle body and spoilers, shark fins, CHMSL designs – the choice is yours whether you want the camera to blend in or stand out.

Gentex is a complete rear vision systems system supplier. All of it engineered to operate as a system yet designed to match the styling of each individual vehicle.

Because at the end of the day, you want your cameras and displays to look as good as they see.
