The slow movement of Schumann's 2nd Symphony ("Adagio espressivo") is among the most beautiful of his symphonic movements. Leopold Stokowski recorded the work in 1950 with 'his Symphony Orchestra' (a specially selected band of top New York musicians, including many from the NBC Symphony and New York Philharmonic). Ivan March in the 'Gramophone' wrote: "Stokowski comes fully into his own with the string cantilena of the glorious 'Adagio,' moulding the melody with complete expressive freedom." (From a Cala CD release).
