In the summer and fall of 2011, News 12 New Jersey's investigative reporter, Walt Kane, produced more than a dozen reports detailing waste and abuse within the Union City Police Department. The investigation revealed that police chief Charles Everett and other influential officers were paid tens of thousands of dollars a year for special "detail" assignments, and were often paid for hours they did not work.
The investigation has had far-ranging consequences. The police chief resigned, the Attorney General has begun a criminal investigation, and an independent administrative investigation resulted in departmental charges against multiple officers. In addition, policies regarding off duty details have been completely re-written.
