I learned via Matt DeVos that John H. Conway, Heidi Burgiel and Chaim Goodman-Strauss write about these in their book "The Symmetries of Things" (which I think I will receive for Christmas!).

To make my own I coloured toothpicks with food colouring and used little hair elastics. It only cost me $20 or so to colour 12 packages of toothpicks and the colour is very bright. They do stain my fingers a bit, but not much now.

With a bit of coaxing I might re-edit the footage and release a more instructional version.

Try making christmas ornaments from these!

Cool facts: If you remove the inner sticks, innermost cage is a rhombic dodecahedron! Please add information about the symmetry group in the comments.

This is a great project for kids of the slightly more dextrous type
