Vaginal bleeding occurs in about 20%-40% of women during the first trimester and can be chalked up, in most cases, to four different causes. The first is an ectopic pregnancy, or a pregnancy that occurs somewhere other than inside the uterus. The next thing that a doctor would look for is a miscarriage. The third thing that could be likely, maybe a polyp, or some infection, or inflammation somewhere, or a disease of the cervix, uterus, or vagina. If all of those things have checked out and been okay, then there is a possibility that you could be having some implantation spotting. This can occur about 10-14 days after the fertilization of the egg when it's implanting itself into the wall of the uterus. However this diagnosis is usually only given if, like I said, all other things have been checked out and you're still just having a little spotting.

How do you know if it's a period or if you're having implantation spotting? That's a really good question. Implantation spotting is probably just going to be that, spotting. It's not going to be heavy in most cases. The only way you can know for sure is to take a pregnancy test and see if you're pregnant. If you are pregnant and having any vaginal bleeding, then you need to talk to your provider, and he or she can decide if you just need to be watched because it could be implantation spotting, or if it's something else that might require more treatment and investigation. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
