A Family Center of Grosse Pointe "Ask the Experts" presentation with Stephanie Cork, Director of Education for Reading and Language Arts Centers.

Older students have different needs than younger ones, yet it is often gaps in the same underlying skills which cause reading difficulties of higher level text. Sixty-five percent of the words in written text above the sixth grade level contain Greek and Latin roots.

Learning how to weave in root instruction can improve vocabulary, increase comprehension and allow older children to read and spell more advanced terminology. Basic skills, meanwhile, can be addressed in a more sophisticated manner.
