The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting at it headquarters on Monday, December 17 to discuss Kosovo’s decision to transform the nation’s security force into a regular army.

Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence and insists the army would violate a UN resolution which ended Kosovo's 1998-99 war of independence.

While NATO’s chief called the action by Kosovo “ill-timed,” the US approved it as “Kosovo’s sovereign right” as an independent nation that unilaterally broke away from Serbia in 2008.
