Don't count on a lockbox or gun safe to keep your child safe. That system fails to establish the real foundation of safe gun handling for your child: TRAINING. A responsible parent or guardian who has made the wise decision to increase their personal safety and self-reliance by inclusion of a gun in the domicile, has the responsibility to teach everyone under that roof about its existence and safe operation. Failure to do so and an over reliance on Protectionist-advocated and mandated "lockup" solutions could endanger your child. The lock-up "solution" can be thwarted by your child, you can forget to close it, and it only covers one location: your home. More damaging is that you are leaving your child in a state of ignorance. And by just locking up the gun (or hiding it), you have created a TABOO that the child will investigate when you are gone. De-fuse that problem head on by committing to a lifetime of fun but purposeful firearms training. And this training can and should begin when they are young. It establishes a mindset of responsibility that can transfer to other "dangerous things." It does take commitment and work (as do all good things) but the rewards are great. I set forth several the Nutnfancy TENETS OF TRAINING for your consideration in this process: downfalls of following conventional wisdom and political correctness, the guiding force of your VALUE system, how competence and confidence should be your training goals, how your parenting style will affect the process, importance of establishing standards of behavior with your kids, how progress is variable with each child, how to expect imperfection, and how to make the whole process fun. I establish four original training levels using humorous but descriptive names: Zygote, Tadpole, Scout, and JEDI. Each one has its own goals and areas of focus, discussed in the video. After training the ZYGOTE understands that a gun can be dangerous and is introduced to the Safe Gun Handling principles that will be reinforced throughout life. The "taboo" of the gun is de-fused with hands on instruction in safe conditions with the instructor. He or she will soon consider it a normal item within your household (just like an electrical outlet) and secretive handling will hold no interest. The TADPOLE is introduced to airguns and perhaps .22s and safe handling procedures are reinforced and instructed. Some entertaining family markmanship exercises that build confidence levels and also make great family memories. You will see improvements in understanding and proper use of gun nomenclature here. No un-chaparoned firearm access is allowed. As in the Zygote level, the BUG OUT concept is instructed if an unsecured firearm is encountered outside the home that they are to leave immediately; it could save their lives. Experience, patience, gun handling, and practice can bring the child to the SCOUT level. You will be heartened to see an improved and more autonomous gun handler at this level. They will be able to safely load, unload, carry, and shoot the gun here. Independence will emerge and be it can be fostered in certain ways. They gain a trust level here to perhaps go out on solo outings with an air rifle or .22 in wilderness locations after safety briefings (obey local laws of course). At the Scout level, they are introduced and expected to help with the gun logistics as well. The child may develop a continuing interest in firearms here or maybe abandon all interest; it is up the him or her to progress out of this level and you cannot do it for them. A Scout level of safety training and firearms proficiency is adequate for most purposes. However the real satisfaction and joy for the instructing parent comes when the child achieves the JEDI gun training level. At this level, the child is completely autonomous and proven trustworthy in the handling of firearms. Parental monitoring is not required anymore. However consistent reinforcement of safey principles and tactical instruction is provided. The Jedi-level teenager can instruct other children if they possess a high maturity level. They can also be full functioning members in your household security plan. Watching the proficient JEDI in action after years of training is gratifying. Again the personality attributes of each child will affect progress, access, and trust levels and variances in should be made for this. Many of these concepts abraid political correctness but this is the path to REAL Gun Safety within your home. Make the commitment, put in the work, and you will be amazed at what your child is capable of and they will enjoy a lifetime of accident-free firearms use. /////////////////// Music used under license by "DoKashiteru" ///////The information contained herein is for your consideration and assistance however you assume all responsibilities and liabilies for the storage and access levels of firearms within your home.
