Larnaka - 5/11/2010
Violent tragic episodes initiated by the members of the fascist- racist- chauvinist movements broke out while the Rainbow Festival, the largest antiracist multicultural event in Cyprus, was taking place in Larnaca on last Friday evening. One Cypriot musician was stabbed and several Festival-goer immigrants were merciless beaten up with batons by the racists as well as lots of others were injured. Members of racist movements- some of them with mask-covered faces & tattoos of Swastika sign- went in the Festival area and broke out the chairs, threw bottles at the participants of the Festival, cut off the power cable of sound system as well as attacking anyone they found in front, including the children awaiting in the caravan. Instead of taking efficient measures to safeguard the Festival participants from any physical and verbal humiliation by the racist group, police rather put pressure and exercised violence on the anti-racist group to pave the way for the racists to proceed with the protest shouting out loud their chauvinistic and racist slogans. Police 'managed' to arrest 4 Cypriot participants of the Festival and 2 minor migrants whereas none from the racists and fascists who were evidently carrying batons, oil-paints, stones as well as sharp materials to attack the participants of the Festival.
The festival in Larnaca was organized with support from the European Commission Representation in Cyprus and welcomed by the Head of the Authority against Discrimination and Racism, the Mayor of Larnaca and the Head Office of the European Commission in Cyprus.
