I've always loved Anthony Newley and his music and his "panache". A very underrated musical genius who couldn't read or play music - he "heard" it and his partner Leslie Bricusse did the lyrics and others took it from there. Unfortunately he became a parody of himself by playing up his very unique vocal sound. He was always the lonely clown who couldn't find love. After a show at the Sahara in Vegas he came out and said to the audience "Thank you - you were great, but then so was I" Bricusse and Newley wrote a ton of well known beautiful music. Tony Newley made a raunchy "Fellini-esque" film about his life entitled "Can Hieronymous Merkin ever forget Mercy Humppe and find True Happiness" My good friend Daren Kelly thinks it would make a good stage musical. When I started to self teach myself to sing it was singing along with Tony - I can do a good imitation of him
