The first 10 seconds of each match are "autonomous" meaning anything the robots do is pre-programmed and happens without any human interaction. Only after the bell rings marking the end of the autonomous period do the drivers step forward and take control of the robot. Two drivers control the robot for the rest of the match - one driving it around the course and the other operating the special functions such as ball pickup and delivery. This delivery of 3 balls autonomously is pretty amazing and a great way for an alliance to get all three of their balls off the field in the autonomous period so they can begin scoring in the regular period.
