From 2001 to 2010 an international effort supported by IFAD was implemented through two phases to promote the sustainable conservation and use of neglected and underutilized species (NUS).
This project represented the first UN-supported endeavor on NUS, and was characterized by highly participatory and interdisciplinary approaches that involved a wide range of stakeholders - scientists engaged in surveying, collecting, conserving and studying genetic diversity, farmers contributing to cultivation and maintenance on farm, breeders developing better varieties and user groups, including women associations.
It successfully tested out a new framework for enhancing the use of NUS, a framework that is of particular relevance in today's context of the need for production systems to adapt and be resilient to climate change.

Bioversity International has been working for more than ten years in south Asia and Latin America to empower the rural poor by strengthening their income opportunities and nutritional security through the improved use and marketing of neglected and underutilized plant species.
