Pakistan had a chance to make amends for its poor performance with the bat - and for a time it did, reducing the Australians to 4/54, thanks largely to a fired-up Mohammed Akram. However a defiant partnership between an aggressive Ricky Ponting (197) and a more stoic Justin Langer (144) yielded a mammoth 327 runs for the fifth wicket. There was litle else of note from the Australian bats, though there hardly needed to be. Akram picked up five wickets for Pakistan, bowling some hostile if occasionally wayward spells.
