I filmed this search and rescue demonstration at the June 19 2011 Father's Day Wings and Wheels held at the Vernon Airport in British Columbia. There's minimal editing and no music in this video of the Cormorant helicopter and it's crew as they demonstrate how to lower and pick up someone while the helicopter hovers. I was only a few meters from the pick-up and the down-wash from the helicopter rotors was like a hurricane. Difficult to stand steady.
Canada's only Air Force base in British Columbia is situated in the heart of Vancouver Island's Comox Valley. With six CC-115 Buffalo Aircraft and five CH-149 Cormorant Helicopters, 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron carries out search and rescue operations in the busiest region in Canada, stretching from the B.C.-Washington border to the Arctic, and from the Rocky Mountains to 1,200 km out into the Pacific.
