Here's a look at this year's growth so far. Overall, it's looking good but this has been one crazy Summer weather-wise. Here in southern Ohio, we went from record breaking rainfalls to a drought. The bananas & castor beans haven't like this... but the EE's don't seem to mind. Overall, these are probably the smallest plants I've ever had yet some of my biggest Thailand Giants, at least the sheltered ones... Now this week is calling for our hottest stretch yet and the TG's might finally start to succumb. This was filmed on September 1st so I have about another month+. Then, it's time to start monitoring the long range forecasts for frost.

FYI, I will have free Thailand Giants to give away - mid October. Local only and probably limited to one weekend only - NO EXCEPTIONS. Most TG'S will be huge(heavy)...I'll also have some uprights & jack's giant EE's, some wimpy zebrinas and some castor bean seeds. Stay tuned.

+shukiesha thompson Yes, I cut them down & cover with wood chip mulch just before the first frost in the fall. Right now, I'm looking at a few more weeks:(

lovely garden! just would like to know exactly what you do when and how you protecting them for the winter??!Thanks
Midwest Banana Farms
+Sata Giuricici Thanks! The bananas are cold hardy - before the first fall frost I cut them down knee high and pile mulch around them. The elephant ears get dug up & dried out stored in boxes or bags for the winter. The castor bean are annuals(in Ohio) so I cut them down each fall & burn. It all takes a little bit of work ;)

ok, this garden is absolutely amazing. your camera work is very good too. but where in ohio are you? Im in Pataskala and Im growing basjoo musa, alocasia portora, Chinese windmill palms.Im just a couple years into it since a customer gave me my first musa basjoo pup. Its been a sickness ever since. Im still experimenting and learning. You must be retired because what Im seeing here is a full time job. Hats off to you. keep posting these great vids. Id love to see videos on the various aspects of care of these plants. propagation, winterizing, fertilizing, etc. Beautiiful!!!
Midwest Banana Farms
+Geoff Horvath Ha, sounds like we are both afflicted with that same sickness...I'm north of Cincinnati - closer to Kings Island. I keep a busy schedule so this garden is just a part time thing although it does take quite a bit of time in the very beginning each spring and again at the very end, just before frost. I learn new techniques each year to simply the process not to mention the beds are filling up w/ musa bajoos...

can I ask where you purchase you're red Abyssinian banana's and TG's from? I'm also located in Ohio and need good start and/or seed seller. I'm just getting into this stuff and it's addicting and I see you are a full blown addict! I love it
Midwest Banana Farms
+Mariel Hartman Most recently I have bought both(in person) at Brian's Botanical's in Louisville, KY. They also do mail order/on line. Also, HJ Benkins in Cincinnati has had them in the past.

The biggest ones are called Thailand Giants. When I plant them(each Spring), I amend the soil w/ compost & manure, Osmecote slow release fertilizer and Milgornite fertilizer. I also periodically water w/ Miracle Grow while they're smaller. Yes I have a fig plant but no coco bean. I do have castor beans though. They're my tallest plants.
