How heterogeneous are individual infectious viruses? Optical Trapping Virometry is a technique that we are developing with the support of the DP2 common fund. This technique allows multiparameter analysis and potential sorting of virions at singleparticle level with singlemolecule resolution under native conditions. Application of this technique to the HIV1 virions is yielding new understanding of virion heterogeneity and how these heterogeneity may impact HIV1 transmission and infection. Fresh ideas on HIV vaccine and therapeutic strategies to eradicate HIV infection are also generated from these studies.
