Carleton Mabee 2009-09-20 Part 1 of 7 - Century House Hist. Soc., Rosendale, NY Dr. Carleton Mabee will present an illustrated lecture based on his newest book, Promised Land: Father Divines Interracial Communities in Ulster County, New York. Father Divine was a religious leader, originally from Harlem, who established 30 communities in Ulster County in the 1930s. Including at Greenkill Park (the former cement company resort near Creek Locks) and down town High Falls. He was considered a holy man by some and a fraud by others. Born in China, Dr. Mabee lives in Ulster County and has written on many subjects including Sojourner Truth, the abolitionist movement, The Wallkill Valley Railroad, and the Poughkeepsie railroad bridge. Dr. Mabee won the Pulitzer Prize for biography for The American Leonardo: The Life of Samuel F.B. Morse. Now retired from teaching, he was a professor at SUNY New Paltz and Clarkson College.
