Millions of dollars in levies - who's watching?
Producers pay a $5 levy every time they sell an animal; $4.58 is allocated to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), of which $3.66 in grass fed levies is spent on marketing Australian beef. In 2010-11 $49 million will be spent on marketing beef from grass fed levies.
Cattle Council President and beef producer from North Queensland, Greg Brown, explains the role of Cattle Council in overseeing the marketing levy in the 2 minute YouTube clip.
MLA's proposed marketing plan to grow demand for Australian beef at home and abroad is put under the microscope by Cattle Council's Marketing Taskforce, which is made up of beef producers. Other red meat industry representatives also have their input.
